Rare Combination of A Legendary Musical Instrument Exponent, Great Music Composer and Unsung Lyricist! End Result - A Cult Classic Song!

This is a super hit song with a cult classic status from the movie Konjum Salangai starring Gemini Ganesan, Savithri and others. The music for this movie had been composed by one of the great music directors of the yesteryears S M Subbaiah Naidu. The song was written by the famous yet unsung lyricist Ku Ma Balasubramaniam who has also written such famous songs as Aadaatha Manamum, Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Kunguma Poove, Chithiram Pesithadi to name a few. There were quite a few legends in Tamil Cinema prior to the period of dominance by MSV and Kannadhasan. This song also showcases the talent of the legendary Nadaswaram Exponent Karukurichi P Arunachalam and has been composed as sort of a duet between his talented exploitation of the divine instrument and S Janaki. The effortless way in which Savithri has lip 'synced' this difficult song is a lesson in acting to all modern day actresses. The simple reason why the song has come out so well and has reached a cult classic status is because it has been dedicated to Lord Muruga the god of balance and harmony (swaram) and has received his blessings in full! The song also features Gemini and others.

Murugan Songs - Muthai Tharu from Arunagirinaathar

Murugan Songs - Muthai Tharu from Arunagirinaathar
This is a verse from the famous Tamil literary work Thiruppugazh by Arunagirinaathar who had sung it with the blessing of Lord Muruga himself. It is exactly this scene which has been portrayed in this song by TMS who has played the role of Arunagirinaathar. The role of Lord Muruga has been played by young Raghuram (the famous choreographer). The song of course has been sung by TMS himself in his inimitable style. Be it clarity, tone, tenor, diction or mastery of the language no one has or ever will come even remotely close to TMS. The life story of Arunagirinaathar is the symbolic representation of the famous saying To Err is Human and To Forgive is Divine. There is hope for each and everyone of us. But it doesn't mean we can keep on erring of course!

Murugan Songs - Arupadai Veedu Konda

Murugan Songs - Arupadai Veedu Konda
This is a magical song that has its origins 2000 years back from the Sangam period of Tamil Naadu. This version is sort of an abridged version of the original Classical Tamil Literature song by Nakkeeranaar, Thiru Murugaatruppadai, which is part of the Sangam Literature collection Pathuppaattu. Legend has it that Lord Muruga appeared before Nakkeeranaar with his consorts to bless him to bless him even before he had completed the literary work. This is a special posting on the occasion of the Kanda Sashti Viratham period which is being observed currently (18th Oct 2009 to 23rd Oct 2009). Each day of the Viratham devotees recite songs and literary works about Lord Muruga. The song to be read/recited on the first day is Thiru Murugaatruppadai. This particular video is from the movie Kandan Karunai and features Sirghazhi Govindarajan and Sivakumar. The song has been sung by Sirghazhi Govindarajan in his 'Venkala Kural'! Incidentally it is this song in which actress Sridevi had made her first ever appearance (See 1.45 to 1.49 of video).

Devotional Song Hits - Marudhamalai Maamaniye

Devotional Song Hits - Marudhamalai Maamaniye
This is a hit song from the movie Thevarin Deivam on Marudhamalai Murugan sung by the classical music exponent Madurai Somu. The music composer Kunnakkudi Vaithyanathan had composed music for this song. He had mentioned about the god given gift of the lyricist Kannadaasan from his experience with him during the composition of this song. He had explained how Kannadaasan just kept churning out line after line of the song with out any hesitation as he kept increasing the tempo of the music on his violin till it reaches a crescendo (watch 4.34 to 6.18 on the video). In fact during the last bit of the song (Paninyadhu, Mazhaiyadu...) Vaithyanathan had actually just given a difficult bit of music as a challenge to the poet than his actual composition. But to every one's amazement including ours Kannadaasan had just reeled of these words which are so meaningful, rhyming and perfectly as per Tamil grammar! Truly God's Gift! In the video you can see Kunnakkudi Vaithyanathan seated on the dais beside Madurai Somu playing the violin.
