Singer Super Star of the 1940s and 50s! The One Supreme Voice of Tamil Cinema that Worried Even the Greatest of His Contemporaries!

T R Mahalingam was an extremely popular stage and drama artist with a unique and stunning countertenor voice in the 1930s. He was a contemporary of singing legends such as MKTB, SG Kittappa and at a later stage TMS. In those days due to the absence of public address systems, stage actors and singers had the need to train their voices for reach and clarity. T R Mahalingam apart from his training, was truly gifted in this area since he was blessed with a voice that had a tremendous range (from countertenor to bass) in addition to reach and clarity. His movie debut was in the year 1937 with AVM's Nandakumar. His first major hit was Sri Valli in the year 1945. Following his meteoric rise during the late 40s and the early 50s he had a downfall in his career during the mid 50s when some movies of his own production house failed to take-off. It was Kannadasan who gave him a break again in 1958 with Kannadasan's own movie Maalai Itta Mangai. T R Mahalingam has to his credit some of the most popular and evergreen songs of Tamil Cinema. During the later stages of his career he acted in several character roles and supporting roles. He immortalized the character of Bana Pathirar in the movie Thiruvilayadal. His rendition of the song Isai Tamil Nee Seitha in this movie is a Hallmark of the Calibre of Songs and Music produced by Tamil Cinema. His voice was so powerful it had even the Great TMS worried during the filming of the movie Sri Valli in which TMS had to sing his bit after a six minute high-pitched and powerful rendition by TRM! Read about this interesting bit and more here! The song presented here in honour of TRM is from the movie Amuthavalli. Lyrics by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram and composed by Viswanathan - Ramamoorthy. Singers T R Mahalingam and P Susheela.

Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

This is a hit song from the movie Naam Iruvar (1947), starring T R Mahalingam, T R  Ramachandran, V K Ramasami, T A Jayalakshmi, Baby Kamala and others. This song features Baby Kamala who later went on to become a dancing super star of the Tamil Movie industry in her own right. The plot is as follows. T R Mahalingam plays the part of Sukumar, the son of a black-marketer  who falls in the company of evil friends and invests his money in making a film in accordance with their advice. However, the film never sees the light of the day and leaves Sukumar heavy in debt. He is eventually questioned by financiers and when he fails to pay them, is dragged to court. How he is rescued from his perilous situation forms the climax of the story. At the end of the movie, Sukumar becomes a nationalist and a Gandhian. Nam Iruvar also marked the debut of V. K. Ramasamy who plays the role of an evil old man who desires to marry Sukumar's lady-love Kannamma. The film had a prominent comedy track provided by T. R. Ramachandran of Sabapathy fame. (Courtesy Wikipedia) Music was composed by R Sudarsanam and the song was written by Kothamangalam Subbu. The song was sung by M S Rajeswari. The movie was produced and directed by AVM.

All Time Great Hit! - 1958

This is an all time great hit song from the movie Malai Itta Managai featuring T R Mahalingam and Mainavathy (Pandari Bhai's Sister) from the year 1958. The movie was produced by Kannadasan and did not do well at the box office. But the song was a super hit then and popular even now! Will One Day Suffice? - An All Time Great Hit!

This song is one the greatest hits in the entire history the Tamil Movie Industry. TS Balaiah has simply excelled in his role as Hemanatha Bagavathar the conceited and talented vocalist in this super duper blockbuster hit of all time, Thiruvilayadal, starring Savitri, K.B.S., Muthuraman, Nagesh, T.R. Mahalingam, Devika, Manorama and others with Sivaji playing the lead role as Shivji! (Lord Shiva) himself. The movie had some great performances - Sivaji and Savitri (Nadigar and Nadigaiyar Thilagam) as Shiva-Parvathi, Nagesh as Dharumi, AP Nagarajan, the director of the movie, as Nakeeran, TS Balaiah as Hemanatha Bagavathar to name a few. The song was sung by Balamurali Krishna, music composed by KV Mahadevan (another Thilagam, Thirai Isai Thilagam!) and was written by (who else could it have been!) the one and only Kannadasan. Just Enjoy the Song!
